Balrog Wings Debate

Gandalf stood his ground on the bridge and yelled, "Hey! do you Balrogs have wings?"

The Balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew. It stepped forward slowly on to the bridge, and suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall. Then in a deafening roar it yelled, "No!"

Gandalf pointed his staff at the wings. "Don't lie! You have wings; right there!"

"Do not! That's my Shadow!"

"Do too have wings!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

After six hours like this Legolas looked at his watch. "I can't stand this any more." He pulled a pin out of the near side of the bridge, and as it crumbled, Gandalf and the Balrog fell into the black pit, still yelling at each other

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

as they faded off into the distance.

Legolas returned to the party to accept their light smattering of applause.
